    Various Presentations on heritage, Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change at ICESCO Pavilion at COP 27

    The pavilion of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) at COP27, in Sharm El-Sheikh, continues its various activities. On Monday, November 14, 2022, ICESCO held several seminars, panel discussions and simulations, during which the Heads of Sectors and Experts reviewed the Organization’s activities, efforts and programmes as well as its various roles in education, science, culture and communication.

    Dr. Kais Al-Hammami, Director of ICESCO Strategic Foresight Center, gave a presentation on “Artificial Intelligence and Climate Transformation… Between Opportunities and Challenges.”

    For his part, Dr. Foued El-Ayni, Expert at the Science and Technology Sector, gave a presentation on training on adapting to climate change and preparing projects to mitigate its effects, while Dr. Abdelmajid Tribak, ICESCO Expert in joint environmental action, gave a presentation on “Women and Climate Changes… Roles and Initiatives.”

    Mr. Nassim Mohand, Dr. Nami Salihi, and Dr. Osama Al Nahas, Experts in ICESCO Culture and Communication Sector, also gave separate presentations respectively on the role of youth in dealing with the impact of climate change on heritage, the impact of climate change on the coastal edge of St. Louis historical city in the Republic of Senegal and on simulation activities.

    ICESCO Headquarters Hosts Cultural and Artistic Event that Calls for Anchoring Equality and Listening to Children’s Voices

    The Headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) hosted a major cultural and artistic event in commemoration of World Children’s Day 2022. Organized by ICESCO in partnership with the office of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Morocco and the HIBA Foundation, the event brought together a high-caliber host of ministers, ambassadors accredited to the Kingdom of Morocco, representatives of international organizations and bodies, as well as child and young artists.

    In his opening remarks at the event, which was held on Monday, November 14, 2022, Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), noted that the Organization places children at the heart of its interests and invests in their creative abilities to nurture their imagination to build prosperous societies, stressing the need to listen to the voices and opinions of children and youth to understand their aspirations for they possess the potential to bring about positive change.

    “This celebration is an opportunity to highlight the fundamental rights of children to engage in building and developing societies and emphasize the need to make them part of comprehensive development plans to ensure that the voices of children and youth are heard in the post-pandemic recovery,” explained ICESCO DG.

    Dr. AlMalik added that ICESCO seeks through this event to convey a positive message of equality and engagement for all children through art as a key instrument for anticipating their future.

    For her part, Dr. Aawatif Hayar, Moroccan Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, delivered an address in which she reviewed Morocco’s efforts to protect children and boost their creativity through a set of policies and initiatives, and the commendable progress achieved in protecting children rights, improving living conditions, equalizing opportunities and instilling social justice in various areas.

    In an address delivered on his behalf by Mr. Mustapha Messaoudi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Youth Department), Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid highlighted that building the present and looking forward to the desired future rests upon developing children and youth capacity, noting that it is incumbent upon all parties concerned to provide them with the appropriate environment to innovate and prosper, enhance their capabilities, and harness their creative potential in different areas.

    Mr. Marwane Fachane, Executive Director of the HIBA Foundation in the Kingdom of Morocco, reviewed the Foundation’s vision and its collaborative programmes geared toward developing and refining youth creative skills by experts and professionals in graphic and plastic arts.

    Dr. Speciose Hakizimana, UNICEF representative in the Kingdom of Morocco, affirmed the Organization’s commitment to providing care for children and building their capacities, emphasizing that this event is part of a range of activities that are aimed at celebrating and engaging children.

    The celebration featured multiple theatrical and musical performances, notably that of young artist Hamza Labied which impressed the audience.

    Various presentations on artificial intelligence ethics and the impact of climate change on heritage and women’s rights at ICESCO Pavilion in COP 27

    The pavilion of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), at COP 27, in Sharm El-Sheikh, held a set of activities, on Tuesday (November 15, 2022), including seminars and panel discussions, during which the heads of sectors and experts reviewed the Organization’s activities, programmes, efforts and its various roles in education, science, culture and communication.


    Dr. Kais Hammami, Director of ICESCO Center of Strategic Foresight, and Mr. Mohammed Hedi Shili, Director of ICESCO Department of Legal Affairs and International Standards, gave a presentation on the importance of developing a charter of artificial intelligence ethics and reviewed the relevant experiences of some of ICESCO Member States.

    In a panel discussion, Mr. Nassim Mohand Amer, expert at ICESCO Culture and Communication Sector, Dr. Soulayman Hashi, Director of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Africa, and Dr. Rachid Belali, researcher in sociology, gave a presentation on traditional irrigation systems as a model for sustainable development. Dr. Nami Salihi, expert at ICESCO Culture and Communication Sector, and Dr. Ismail Al-Faheel and Ms. Amal Othman, researchers in heritage, reviewed the mutual impact between climate change, heritage and culture in Sudan.

    Dr. Abdelmajid Tribak, expert on joint environmental action at ICESCO, and Dr. Fachruddin Mangunjaya, Chairman of the Center for Islamic Studies at the National University of Indonesia, gave a presentation on ways and mechanisms for teaching children to cherish the environment in schools in the Islamic world.

    Dr. Tribak and Dr. Omar Wydadi, researcher in educational sciences, and founding members of the National Office of the Moroccan Alliance for Climate and Development, gave a presentation on civil society and the prospects for joint climate action.

    For their part, Mr. Najib Chiati, Cultural Adviser to ICESCO Director-General, and Ms. Fatiha Bentalha, the plastic artist, gave a presentation on the use of solid waste in plastic panels to raise awareness about preserving the environment.

    The Science and Technology Sector of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is holding a training session on “Guidance, training and development of bankable projects on climate change adaptation and mitigation,” in partnership with the Egyptian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE). The training aims at building the capacities of specialists, mitigating climate change effects, strengthening the mechanisms for financing programmes and projects related to environmental protection, and identifying the relevant needs of developing countries.

    Dr Salim M. Al-Malik, Director(General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met Mr. Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), to explore cooperation in the field of quality standards and their widespread use in the Islamic world.

    During this meeting, held on November 12, 2022, as part of the participation of the two officials in COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Dr. AlMalik stressed that ICESCO is proud to have obtained ISO certification, in 2021, in accordance with the international standards (ISO 9001: 2015) related to quality management systems, adding that the Organization is looking forward to obtaining the certification of Information Security Management System (ISO 27001).
