    ICESCO and German Institute for Dialogue and Understanding “Mouatana” Sign Cooperation Agreement

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the German Institute for Dialogue and Understanding “Mouatana” signed a cooperation agreement for the implementation of a set of joint programs and activities for strengthening scientific and religious dialogue, and promoting the culture of peace, coexistence and mutual respect.

    The agreement was signed by Ambassador Khalid Fathalrahmane, Head of ICESCO’s Center for Civilizational Dialogue, and Mr. Abdul Samad Al-Yazidi, Director General of the German Institute for Dialogue and Understanding “Mouatana.”

    Under the terms of the agreement, ICESCO and the Mwatana Institute will co-organize a series of symposia, conferences and workshops, and support and conduct scientific research to consolidate the values of coexistence and civilizational dialogue. It also provides for the organization of visits by heads of state and government.

    The seminar, held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the German Institute for Dialogue and Understanding “Mouatana,” began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the address of Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General, wherein he underscored that the unique relationship between the Islamic world and Germany is worth pondering upon, explored and studied.

    Besides, he pointed out that the Arab-Islamic culture has represented for centuries a rich field of study for intellects and researchers, with remarkable scientific impartiality, hailing the approach adopted by German thinkers that resulted in inspiring inferences highlighting the treasures of the Arab-Islamic heritage and paved the way for new methods of serious research in this heritage.

    ICESCO Director-General also indicated that the world is currently in dire need of consolidating understanding and finding better ways to express cultural differences far from fanaticism and aggression on sanctities.

    In his address, Dr. Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister of Education and Professional Training of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, stressed the importance of unity and cooperation in building a bright future for all, underscoring that this seminar is a unique opportunity to enhance cooperation and mobilize the capacities, expertise and knowledge of our nations.

    For his part, Mr. Robert Dölger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Morocco, pointed out that Arab studies on European Orientalism open up new perspectives on the Arab world and help to strengthen understanding and cultural exchange between peoples.

    Mr. Abdul Samad Al-Yazidi, Director-General of the German Institute for Dialogue and Understanding “Mouatana,” stressed the importance of understanding the concept of citizenship as every citizen is an ambassador of his or her country.     President of the Union of the Comoros signs the book “Peace at 360 °”

    At the Beit-Salam Presidential Palace in Moroni, capital of the Union of the Comoros, the signing ceremony for the second edition of ICESCO’s book “Peace 360°: from the Talk to the Walk: Building Partnerships and Strengthening Synergies for Peace” was held by H.E. Mr. Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, chairman of the African Union. The ceremony took place in the presence of H.E. Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG) as well as several ministers and advisors to the President of the Union and senior officials.

    The ceremony took place on Monday 24 July 2023, following the reception of the ICESCO DG and the accompanying delegation. The ceremony began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by a speech by Dr. AlMalik, who expressed his thanks and gratitude to H.E. President Azali Assoumani for having honored the second edition of the book “Peace at 360°” by writing its preface. He also praised the Comoros’ sincere commitment to development and prosperity and its dedication to improving the living conditions of its citizens.

    Examination of promoting cooperation in cultural fields between ICESCO and the Union of the Comoros

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) met on 22 July 2023 in Moroni, with Mr. Djaanfar Salim, Comorian Minister of Youth, Employment, Labour, Sports, Arts and Culture to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in culture, arts and youth capacity building.

    During the meeting, Dr. AlMalik reviewed a number of important upcoming events related to culture and youth, including the Conference of Culture Ministers in the Islamic World due to be held in October 2023 in Doha, and the ICESCO Youth Year, which will begin in September 2023 under the auspices of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi of Egypt, thus reflecting the special attention the Organization devotes to youth through pioneering programs, such as the ICESCO Youth Peace Ambassadors Program and the Young Professionals Program.

    ICESCO Director-General highlighted the importance of heritage preservation in the Organization’s orientations and action plans through its programme to inscribe historic sites and cultural elements on the Islamic World Heritage List, calling on the Minister to submit files for the inscription of Comorian heritage sites on this list.

    Dr. Salim M. The project is part of the cooperation between ICESCO and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief) to provide the necessary educational support and teaching resources and offer a second educational opportunity to girls who have dropped out of school.

    The agreement was signed remotely on Wednesday, 19 July 2023, by Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director General, Dr. Tareq Salem al-Abkari, Yemeni Minister of Education, and Engineer Fahmi bin Mansour, CEO of BCHR.

    At the signing ceremony, which was attended by Dr. Koumbou Barry, Head of ICESCO’s Education Sector, and Mr. Anar Karimov, Head of ICESCO’s Partnerships and International Cooperation Sector, Dr. AlMalik expressed his thanks and gratitude to KSRelief for its generous funding of this important project, noting that ICESCO accords major importance to education given its role in achieving sustainable development and for being the best investment to ensure a better future.

    The Foundation’s CEO welcomed the launch of the project, which provides a valuable service to girls who have dropped out of school in Yemen, and thanked the Yemeni Ministry, ICESCO and KSRelief for their support of the project, whose initial phases have been highly successful.

    International Scientific Forum on the Role of Culture and Arts in Combating Crime and Extremism concludes at ICESCO headquarters

    The International Scientific Forum “Culture and Arts and their Role in Combating Crime and Extremism”, held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) in partnership with the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the Gulf Cooperation Council States, issued several important recommendations at the close of its proceedings, which saw the presentation of visions, innovative ideas and rich debates among leaders and experts in the fields of justice, security, culture and the arts.

    The recommendations, released at the end of the Forum on Tuesday, 18 July 2023, included a renewed call for a global definition of extremism to address it from a perspective of justice and equity, an invitation to intellectuals to contribute positively and effectively to enrich the “dialogue of culture and arts on crime and extremism,” the promotion of the roles of the socio-economic and cultural approach in the strategy of combating extremism and terrorism, and the call for making creative training essential and attractive subjects into pre-university studies.

    The recommendations also included the need to empower young people to face major global challenges, the creation of regional centers to provide cultural and artistic services, support for adherence to international conventions and treaties related to the fight against crime and extremism, and the need to intensify official control of all artistic works and visions presented through audiovisual messages to combat ideas that contradict religious and social values.

    The participants welcomed ICESCO’s initiative to create a scientific chair on cultural approaches to the fight against crime and extremism, in cooperation with the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    The second day of the Forum featured five sessions: 1) culture and the arts as a permanent soft power for coexistence between civilizations and peoples; 2) the importance of cultural and artistic content in the fight against extremism; 3) the importance of supporting coexistence between individuals, peoples and civilizations in the fight against extremism; 4) the impact of some cultural and artistic practices in the fight against extremism and crime; 5) types of best practices of cultural and artistic institutions in the fight against extremism and crime.

    At the end of the Forum, Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director General, delivered a speech in which he thanked all of the participants for their commendable contributions during the said sessions and discussions, stressing that they would be examined by the scientific committee of the Forum with a view to including them in the final report.

    ICESCO Director-General praised the distinguished partnership between the Organization and the Naif Arab University of Security Sciences, expressing his gratitude to the University’s leadership and his pride in the partnership.
