    ICESCO and the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE): Exploring prospects of cooperation

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, the Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), received Mr. Ahmed Réda Chami, President of the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council of the Kingdom of Morocco (CESE), along with his accompanying delegation of the Council members. The two parties discussed the prospects of mutual cooperation, especially in the fields of foresight studies and artificial intelligence.

    The Meeting was held on Wednesday April 3rd, 2024, at ICESCO’s Headquarters in Rabat, in the presence of Dr. Abdelilah Benarafa, ICESCO Deputy DG, and several sector heads, department directors, and heads of specialized centers at the Organization. During the meeting, Dr. Al-Malik reviewed ICESCO’s efforts, foresight initiatives, programs, and projects geared toward supporting its Member States in developing the education, science, and culture sectors. He emphasized that the Organization adopts an open approach to partnership and collaboration with all to achieve its strategic objectives.
    Dr. Al-Malik pointed out that ICESCO’s Center for Strategic Foresight has organized several training sessions on foresight and decision-making for the benefit of public servants, private professionals, and youth in its Member States.

    The Organization established its “ICESCO Chair on Women in Science: Artificial Intelligence and the Future” at the Euro-Mediterranean University in Fez. Soon, the “ICESCO Chair for Artificial Intelligence Ethics ” will be established at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

    For his part, Mr. Chami lauded the various roles that ICESCO fills, and the support it lends to its Member States in its areas of competence, reaffirming the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council’s keenness to foster a fruitful cooperation with the Organization considering its distinguished expertise, especially in the fields of strategic foresight and artificial intelligence.

    Following the meeting, ICESCO’s DG took the President of the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council and his accompanying delegation on a tour of the various halls of the International Exhibition and Museum of the Prophet’s Seerah and Islamic Civilization, currently hosted by the Organization through a strategic partnership between ICESCO, the Muslim World League, and the Mohammadia League of Scholars.

    ICESCO Calls for Papers for Specialized Studies Series on Teaching Arabic to Non-Arabic Speakers 2024

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is delighted to call for papers for “The Specialized Studies Series in the Field of Teaching Arabic to Non-Arabic Speakers 2024,” issued by the Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers in support of the Organization’s orientations to promote publishing, consolidate scientific and educational research in the field of the Arabic language, exert efforts to foster its presence at the international scene, and build on linguistic, educational and technological theories to advance this field.

    ICESCO invites researchers and specialists to participate by submitting well-grounded applied academic studies likely to contribute to the development of teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers and enrich the Arabic body of knowledge with contemporary and innovative approaches and methods.

    This is the 4th “Specialized Studies Series in the Field of Teaching Arabic to Non-Arabic Speakers,” issued by ICESCO’s Center for Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers. This project has published three scientific series in applied linguistic studies based on the latest theories in linguistics and education science. The participating experts have shared their expertise and contributed to research initiatives and educational practices to train teachers on methods, strategies, and skills, thus enhancing Arabic learners’ linguistic competence, cultural and professional skills.

    Conclusion of Second Training Session on Psychosocial First Aid

    The second training session on psychosocial first aid, held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, under the theme “Inclusive Wellbeing in Practice”, came to a close on Wednesday 27 March 2024. Shields and certificates of participation were handed out to beneficiaries, including directors and supervisors of youth centers in various Moroccan cities, after completing training on psychological support, particularly for vulnerable groups and those in crises.

    In his remarks at the closing ceremony, Dr Abdelilah Benarafa, ICESCO Deputy Director General, emphasized the utmost importance of mental health and well-being in building cohesive communities capable of facing challenges and crises, particularly amidst the rapid changes witnessed throughout the world, including the Islamic world.

    He added that mental health is at the core of ICESCO’s vision, and noted that the Organization reiterates its commitment to supporting efforts and coordinating joint work to promote mental health, as demonstrated through its strategies and programs. To this end, ICESCO has developed the “Guide on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for Families, Educators, and Local Communities”.

    On his part, Mr. Mustapha Messaoudi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth -Youth Department-, commended the training session for providing beneficiaries with the necessary tools to promote youth’s mental health, in line with the Ministry’s strategic directions.

    Ms. Ramata Almami Mbai, Head of ICESCO’s Social and Human Sciences Sector, lauded the fruitful partnership between the Organization and the Ministry, which culminated in the success of this training course, and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to it. Furthermore, she provided an overview of some of ICESCO’s initiatives in the field of health and mental care. The ceremony concluded with the exchange of honorary shields between officials from ICESCO and the Ministry.

    Financial support from ICESCO for 500 Palestinian students at Egyptian universities

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) granted financial support to 500 Palestinian students, as part of the support program for Palestinian students studying at Egyptian universities, under the patronage of His Excellency President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen, and in cooperation with the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and the Embassy of the State of Palestine in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

    The financial support was delivered to the first group of beneficiaries at the headquarters of the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, where it was distributed in two batches for the benefit of 500 male and female students, with a total of 200,000 US dollars.

    The support reflects ICESCO’s vision and strategic orientations in supporting the efforts of its Member States in the fields of education, science and culture, and its initiatives to support young people, especially Palestinians and their families in light of the brutal aggression they are facing. For record, last November, ICESCO also granted financial support to Palestinian students studying in a number of Moroccan universities.

    The distribution of support to the first group of beneficiaries was attended by Dr. Ali Zidan Abu Zuhri, Chairman of the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and Dr. Dawas Dawas, Secretary-General of the Commission, Chairman of ICESCO’s Executive Council, and on behalf of Dr. Salim Al-Malik, ICESCO Director-General, Mrs. Amira El-Fadil, Advisor to the Director General for External relations, Dr. Naji al-Naji, Cultural Advisor to the Palestinian Embassy in Egypt, and Mr. Omar Khalouk, Financial Auditor at ICESCO’s Financial Controller’s Office, and a number of officials in the Commission and the Palestinian Embassy.

    Second Training Session on Psychosocial First Aid Kicks off

    The second training session held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication of the Kingdom of Morocco kicked off on Monday, March 25, 2024, on the inclusive well-being in practice to build the capacities of 50 beneficiaries of youth centers directors and supervisors in many Moroccan cities, to train them in psychological and social first aid, and provide them with the necessary skills to deal with vulnerable groups and crises situations.

    At the opening of the session, which will last for three days at the headquarters of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication in Rabat, Mrs. Ramata Almamy Mbaye, Head of ICESCO Human and Social Sciences Sector, praised the fruitful cooperation between the Organization and the Ministry and stressed the importance of this training and of increasing the number of its beneficiaries to include directors of youth centers and supervisors of summer camps and associations acting in this field in several Moroccan cities.

    For her part, Ms. Kenza Abourmane, Director of Youth at the Ministry, affirmed that this training aims to provide participants with practical skills in the field of providing psychological support and first aid to vulnerable persons they serve every day.

    Then, the training started with the morning session casting light on the psychological and mental effects of crises and disasters and how to provide first aid in such situations. The afternoon session dealt with the principles and rules of assisting responsibly by respecting safety, rights and dignity.

    ICESCO Director General Meets Speaker of National Assembly of the Parliament of Guyana

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Mr. Manzoor Nadir, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of Guyana, during their participation at the proceeding of the 3rd Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN) held under the banner: “Revitalizing parliamentary action in combating climate change.”

    During the meeting, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on March 25, 2024, Dr. AlMalik reviewed the Organization’s further progress made towards its development, as well as its new vision and strategic orientations aimed at establishing it as an international beacon of civilization and knowledge hub for the Islamic world.

    Dr. AlMalik highlighted ICESCO’s approach of increased communication with its Member States to design programs and projects based on their needs and priorities in coordination with their respective National Commissions.

    For his part, Mr.Manzoor Nadir commended ICESCO’s efforts in building the capacities of youth and women, stressing the willingness of the competent authorities in Guyana to promote collaboration with the Organization in education, science and culture.

    Host of Muslim Ulema visits the Exhibition and Museum of the Prophet’s Seerah at ICESCO

    A host of senior Muslim Ulema and distinguished intellectual figures participating in the Hassani Religious Lectures, held during the holy month of Ramadan and headed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, may Allah assist him, visited the International Exhibition and Museum of the Prophet’s Seerah and Islamic Civilization, currently housed at the headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in Rabat.

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General, received these guests, on Wednesday (March 20, 2024), including Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of AlQuds and the Palestinian territories, Imam and Preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque; Sheikh Essa Darboe, President of The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council; Dr. Bahauddeen Nadwi, Vice Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University, in India; Dr. Hassan Al-Mannai, retired professor from Al-Zaytouna University in Tunisia; and Dr. Akram Nadwi, Director and Co-founder of Al Salam Institute in Oxford, in Britain; as well as the reciters Al-Hussein Al-Qasimi Al-Baqali and Ayoub Nasser from Morocco.

    During the meeting, ICESCO Director-General reviewed the Organization’s vision and strategic orientations, and highlighted its current programs and projects geared towards developing the fields of education, science and culture, noting that ICESCO is open to all parties with the view of serving its Member States and the Muslim communities worldwide, and introducing the cultures and civilization of the Islamic world.

    ICESCO Director General receives Advisor to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt for Religious Affairs

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), received Dr. Osama Al Azhari, Advisor to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt for Religious Affairs, who visited ICESCO’s headquarters in Rabat and gave a lecture entitled: “Today’s youth: tomorrow’s beacon of civilization”.

    At the start of the meeting, which took place on Tuesday 19 March 2024, Dr. AlMalik welcomed Dr. Al Azhari stressing the exceptional relations binding ICESCO and Egypt in the fields of education, science and culture.

    He commended the support of H.E. Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to the Organization’s efforts, and his generous sponsorship of ICESCO’s Year of Youth, which saw the implementation of concrete programs and projects for the benefit of youth in a number of countries in the Islamic world, as part of His Excellency’s ongoing support for youth, exemplified by the announcement he made at the opening of the 14th session of ICESCO’s General Conference in Cairo of the granting of 100 scholarships in Egyptian universities to young people from the Organization’s Member States, and by his proposal to create a Fund to support education and talents in the Islamic world.

    The Director General reviewed the main thrusts of ICESCO’s vision and strategic orientations, as well as the programs and projects it implements in the fields of capacity-building for youth and women, consolidating the values of coexistence, peace and civilizational dialogue, combating extremist ideas, promoting investment in technology, innovation, artificial intelligence and space sciences, disseminating the culture of foresight, and consolidating the status of the Arabic language worldwide.

    He went on to talk about the transformation that occurred in the civilization of the Islamic world with the appearance of hospitals, the stages of their the evolution, and how the need to relieve the sick was first thought of in application of the value of mercy derived from the opening of Surah Al-Fatihah “In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful”, noting that the innovative Muslim mind transformed the word the “Compassionate, the Merciful”, into a “value”, then created a civilization in which mercy became a central value.

    After the lecture, the floor was opened to discussion and questions which Dr. Al-Azhari answered, before ICESCO Director General presented him with a shield of honor.

    ICESCO, NewGlobe Organization Examine cooperation prospects in the field of education

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the NewGlobe Organization, specializing in education on the international level, convened to explore opportunities for collaboration in implementing various initiatives, programs, and projects. Also in attendance were Mr. Jay Kimmelman, CEO and Co-Founder, and Mr. Isfundiar Kasuri, Executive Director of the Pakistan office, as well as Policy and Partnership Director at the Organization. Representing ICESCO during the Meeting were Dr. Boly Koumbou Barry, Head of the Education Sector, and Mr. Anar Karimov, Head of the Partnerships and International Cooperation Sector, alongside experts from both sectors.

    Reviewing ICESCO’s open-door approach and vision to embrace diversity and civilizational richness

    The International Conference on the Protection of Diversity and Fight Against Islamophobia kicked off on Friday (March 8, 2024) in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 

    Organized by the Baku International Center for Multiculturalism, in partnership with the G20 Center for Interreligious Dialogue and the Azerbaijan Policy Analysis Center, the two-day conference brought together scholars and religious leaders from 30 countries, along with experts and representatives of international and non-governmental organizations and bodies. 

    The Conference’s opening session was marked by a reading of the address of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev, who addressed the international community, highlighting Azerbaijan’s advanced role in standing against the active extremist currents that manifest Islamophobia in the West. 

    In his statement at the first session of the Conference, Ambassador Khaled Fathurahman, Head of ICESCO’s Center for Civilizational Dialogue, outlined the Organization’s new vision which stems from an open-door approach to accommodate visions characterized by diversity and cultural richness. The ICESCO official also addressed the civilizational dilemma posed by policies and trends resulting from Western centralism, noting that they attempt to impose and generalize the West’s vision, thus exacerbating the struggles of the future. 

    The conference sessions will address several topics, including cultural diversity, Islam and the clash of civilizations, and women and human Rights.
