    Ministerial Roundtable at ICESCO to discuss launch of Support Fund for Talents in the Islamic World

    The headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) hosted a ministerial roundtable to discuss the broad lines and agree on the implementation mechanisms of the initiative of launching the Support Fund for Talents in the Islamic World, as proposed by H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of the Arab Republic of Egypt, during the 14th Session of the General Conference in Cairo.     The Roundtable, held on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, saw high-level participation, including Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and scientific Research, President of the National Commission for Education, Science and Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt; Dr. Younes Skouri, Minister of Economic Integration, Small Enterprises, Employment and Competencies of the Kingdom of Morocco; Dr. Patrick Mouguiama-Daouda, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Technology Transfer and National Education, the Gabonese Republic; Ms. Amna bint Salim Al Balushi, Secretary-General of the Omani National Commission for Education, Science and Culture; and a representative of the Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education.

    At the beginning of the event, Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General, reiterated his thanks and appreciation for H.E. President El-Sisi for proposing the creation of this fund, noting that ICESCO had held multiple talks with the Member States which welcomed this initiative, which is in harmony with ICESCO’s new vision and strategic orientations to support innovation in the Islamic world.

    In his address, Dr. Ayman Ashour expressed his thanks to the Director-General and the Organization’s working team for the achievements scored over the course of the past three years. He then gave a presentation on the Fund Initiative, stating that Egypt is eager to share its experience in setting up such funds with the Islamic world. He noted that the Republic established a fund in 2019 for sponsoring innovators and talented people by virtue of a presidential decision, a fund which has achieved great success.

    Moreover, the Egyptian Minister stated that the initiative of President El-Sisi also includes offering 100 scholarships to the Islamic world students to study in Egyptian universities that are affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education, 100 scholarships from Al-Azhar University and 50 scholarships from private universities.

    For his part, Dr. Younes Skouri, welcomed the initiative which he described as pioneering, reaffirming the support of the Kingdom of Morocco for such a work, given that it targets a category with no dedicated programs. Dr. Patrick Mouguiama-Daouda commended the Fund’s areas of action, which include promoting gender equality and supporting talented people in the field of innovation in relation to issues of climate change. Likewise, Dr. Amna Al-Balushi stated that this initiative is in line with the interest the Sultanate of Oman accords to talented people, siezing the opportunity to give an overview of the “Tharwa” program, overseen by the Omani Ministry of Education. The Representative of the Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education presented a number of proposals to enrich the initiative.

    At the close of the Roundtable, the Director-General underlines that all ideas and proposals put forth during the roundtable will be elaborated before submitting this initiative to the Executive Council. He added that following that, ICESCO will prepare the final version of the Fund, set out its legal and administrative framework and finalize its working mechanism along with all the relevant matters prior to submitting them to the 2023 session of the Executive Council.

    At ICESCO Headquarters, First Consultative Meeting for the Knowledge Index in the Islamic World

    With high-level participation including ministers, officials and representatives of the ICESCO Member States and international organizations and institutions, the Headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) saw the opening of the First Consultative Meeting on “Strategic Indicators for Development in the Islamic World: Global Knowledge Index as a Model,” held by ICESCO, in partnership with Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The two-day event aims to discuss the Global Knowledge Index as a standard for measuring the knowledge performance of world countries and understanding the changes they undergo and the challenges they face.

    The Meeting opened with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by an address by Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General, who highlighted the benefits of living in this era of knowledge advancement, noting that the power of states is now measured by their achievements in the field of technology and scientific research and their abilities to keep up with knowledge trends.

    For his part, Mr. Jamal bin Huwairib, CEO of Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, reaffirmed his Foundation’s eagerness to develop and widen the scope of cooperation with ICESCO to include new fields, notably promoting the status of Arabic, supporting knowledge paths and involving the youth in the process of building knowledge societies.

    Speaking next was Dr. Hany Torky, Chief Technical Advisor and Knowledge Project Director at the UNDP, who commended ICESCO’s efforts to support cultural and knowledge development in its Member States. The UNDP official also highlighted the importance of the Global Knowledge Index, which includes 37 ICESCO Member States.

    Following the opening session, the Ministerial session was held, which focused on the knowledge challenges in the Islamic World.     For his part, H.E. Dr. Patrick Mouguiama-Daouda, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Technology Transfer and National Education, the Gabonese Republic, underlined the need to work towards disseminating knowledge and promoting the exchange of expertise to reach the youth, women and the most vulnerable groups. Dr. Abdellatif Miraoui, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation of the Kingdom of Morocco, also gave an address where he highlighted the importance of keeping up with modern technology, capitalizing on young talents, attracting capacities and giving due attention to social and human sciences.

    At the end of the session, a discussion session was held where several secretaries general of Member States’ National Commissions asked many questions and put forth some proposals that enriched the theme of the session.

    ICESCO receives ISO 27001 Certification for Information Security Management Systems

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) received the internationally recognized ISO 27001 Certification for Information Security Management Systems, as a result of the Organization’s implementation of best practices for data security and risk management in light of its new vision aimed at the modernization and transformation of administrative processes through investment in digital mechanisms and administrative innovation.

    ICESCO has been successfully certified to ISO 27001 following an internal evaluation of its information security system to identify vulnerabilities and address them. This was followed by a detailed, comprehensive external audit by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which demonstrated the Organization’s compliance with the requirements of the ISO 27001 standard.

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), affirmed that reception of the said certification is part of the Organization’s relentless quest for optimal information security across all sectors, departments and centers through the proactive implementation of international best practices for data security and anticipatory risk management.

    He explained that ICESCO has developed an information security system that is based on the best technical specifications and that is implemented effectively and maintained consistently, adding that the Organization is keen to raise its employees’ awareness of the importance of information security and equip them with the necessary knowledge on the subject.

    It is worth noting that the ISO 27001 certification is granted to organizations and institutions that adopt efficient systems to protect data, information and intellectual property and conduct effective risk assessments to identify and mitigate risks and thus achieve optimal security.

    In 2021, ICESCO received the ISO 9001:2015 certification for Quality Management Systems demonstrating the compliance of the Organization’s sectors, departments and centers with the requirements of the international standard.

    ICESCO and MBRF explore cooperation prospects

    During the meeting held today, December 20, 2022, at ICESCO Headquarters in Rabat, in the presence of several ICESCO’s heads of sectors and departments and Dr. Huwairib’s accompanying delegation, the two parties reaffirmed their keenness to promote cooperation, which had already been set into motion even before signing the cooperation agreement.

    They also discussed cooperation in some fields notably, the Foresight Report: Future of Knowledge, annually issued by the Foundation and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), which features recommendations for decision-makers to support countries in building cooperation and innovation capacities.

    The meeting also focused on the importance of the participation of all ICESCO Member States in this report, as the number currently stands at only 37 countries, given the significance of their participation in such indexes to assess and diagnose the challenges facing them as a first step towards overcoming them. The two parties also stressed the need for accurate and updated information supported by figures and statistics.

    In commemoration of World Arabic Language Day.. ICESCO takes part in international symposium and conference in Malaysia

    In commemoration of World Arabic Language Day, the Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) took part in an international symposium on the Arabic language and identity and an international conference themed “The Reality of Teaching Arabic in Malaysian Universities – Expertise, Experience, Challenges, and Solutions.”

    Dr. Majdi Bin Haji Ibrahim, Head of the Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers, represented the Center at the two international events. During the symposium, which was held by the Arid International Platform for Arabic-speaking scholars, experts, and researchers on Sunday, December 18, 2022, Dr. Haji Ibrahim reviewed ICESCO’s efforts towards promoting Arabic and its established strategies and mechanisms for strengthening attention to the language and its identity using international expertise and modern working methods.

    During the conference, which was held by the International Institute for Muslim Unity at the International Islamic University Malaysia, on Monday, December 19, 2022, he noted the paramount importance of linguistic awareness among Arabic-speaking and non-Arabic speaking learners of the language, stressing the need to integrate the religious perspective into Arabic-teaching approaches and adopt effective means to develop existing teaching methods.

    The two events brought together a host of specialized researchers from international organizations and institutions in Malaysia, Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Nigeria and Indonesia.

    ICESCO and UNPFA explore cooperation prospects

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) held a meeting to explore cooperation developments between the Organization and the Fund and discuss future partnership programs and projects in the fields of humanitarian work, youth and women capacity building, building peace and issues of demographic dividend.

    Ms. Amira Al-Fadil, Head of the Sector of Partnerships and International Cooperation; and Ms. Ramata Almamy Mbaye, Head of the Sector of Human and Social Sciences, represented ICESCO in the meeting, held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at ICESCO Headquarters in Rabat. The UNPF was represented by Mr. Mabingue Ngom, Director of the UNPF Representation Office to the African Union.

    During the meeting, Mr. Ngom commended the efforts exerted by ICESCO in the fields of building peace and promoting civilizational dialogue. At the end of the meeting, the two parties agreed to implement several joint projects to support the achievement of Africa Vision 2063 and the goals of sustainable development to build knowledge-based, peaceful and sustainable societies.

    ICESCO workshop on smart, sustainable and resilient cities kicks off in Indonesia

    The workshop on smart, sustainable and resilient cities, which is being held by ICESCO Science and Technology Sector, in cooperation with the Bandung Institute of Technology, the Smart City and Community Innovation Center and Bandung City Council, kicked off on Monday (December 19, 2022), in Bandung, Republic of Indonesia. The workshop aims at highlighting the best practices for the development of smart cities, developing strategies and finding solutions to the challenges facing cities, and building the capacities of 300 beneficiaries in the areas of environmental protection and smart cities.

    During the opening of the four-day hybrid workshop, Dr. Foued El-Ayni, expert at Science and Technology Sector, reviewed the Organization’s efforts to promote the concept of smart cities in Muslim countries and its endeavor to develop opportunities for fruitful cooperation with scientific organizations and institutes, and research centers in the Member States, to benefit from modern technology applications in the fields of communication, space science and environmental protection.

    The participants in the workshop, including international experts and specialists, and officials of several organizations and institutions working in the field of environmental protection and modern technology, highlighted ways to develop, plan and finance smart city strategies, ways to benefit from modern technologies in finding solutions for smart cities, and mechanisms for measuring and analyzing the performance of smart cities and their indicators.     ICESCO organizes cultural celebration in Mauritius in commemoration of World Arabic Language Day

    The ICESCO Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in cooperation with the Arabic Speaking Union in Mauritius, organized a cultural celebration at the University of Mauritius in commemoration of World Arabic Language Day. The event featured various cultural activities for Arabic students of different levels.

    The celebration’s opening ceremony, which was held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, saw the participation of Dr. Anwar Husnoo, Vice Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr. Avinash Teeluck, Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr. Zahid Nazurally, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Ismael Rawoo, Parliamentary Private Secretary, and Mr. Ghulam Muhammad, President of the Arabic Speaking Union in the Republic of Mauritius.

    ICESCO takes part in forum on promotion of dialogue and tolerance among youth in Oman

    The Center for Civilizational Dialogue of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Ministry of Education of the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, held a regional forum on the promotion of the principles of constructive dialogue and values of tolerance among youth through social media. The event brought together several national institutions in Oman involved in anchoring the values of dialogue and tolerance.

Haji, President of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kenya, his accompanying delegation and a delegation from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Kingdom of Morocco, to discuss the prospects of cooperation between ICESCO and Kenya in areas of common interest.

    After the meeting, which took place on Friday, December 16, 2022, Dr. Benarafa, accompanied by Mrs. Amira El Fadil, Head of the Partnerships and International Cooperation Sector, accompanied the Kenyan delegation on a tour of the International Exhibition and Museum of the Prophet’s Biography and Islamic Civilization, which is currently held at ICESCO’s Headquarters in Rabat, where they were given detailed information on the various pavilions and sections of the Exhibition.
