    ICESCO Launches Second Edition of “My Thesis in 1000 Words” with Special prize on Artificial Intelligence

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World are pleased to announce the opening of the call for nominations for the second edition of “My Thesis in 1000 Words” Prize. This Prize is open to PhD students in universities across the Islamic world who have completed their theses and dissertations but have not yet defended them. The Prize is organized in partnership with the Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Center at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, in collaboration with ICESCO Chair of Machine Learning in Remote Sensing at the same University, the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, and the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science.

    This edition features two prizes in different fields: the first covering all disciplines, and the second is exclusively for artificial intelligence specializations in remote sensing and geographic information systems. A panel of experts and academics in the respective fields will evaluate the video applications to select five finalists in each theme for the final round.

    The selected candidates will be invited to Sultan Qaboos University to present their work in front of the jury at the final ceremony. The jury will select the first and second place winners, while the audience will choose the recipients of the audience prize for each category.

    • Fill out the registration form at:

    • Record a video in one of ICESCO’s three working languages (Arabic, English, French), creatively presenting the thesis in less than 1000 words, to be submitted by 15 September 2024.
    • Video must be in landscape mode, recorded in a quiet place with clear sound and good lighting.
    • Name the video with the candidate’s full name and university.
    • The video must be in at least 1080p resolution and in MP4 format.
    • The file size must not exceed 500 MB.
    • Attach a summary in Word format not exceeding 1000 words with the registration form, carrying the candidate’s full name and university.
    • Winners of the first edition are not eligible to participate.
    The list of finalists will be announced at the beginning of November 2024, and the winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on 17 December 2024.

    ICESCO Organizes Open Day for Participants in First Maghreb Education Federation in Rabat

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) hosted a delegation of 80 participants in the first edition of the Maghreb Education Federation on Thursday, 4 July 2024, at its headquarters. The Open Day brought together university professors and doctoral students from various universities in Europe, the Maghreb, and West Africa.

    In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Abdelilah Benarafa, ICESCO Deputy Director-General, outlined the Organization’s mission, vision, strategic orientations, key initiatives and programs in education, science, and culture, as well as the major achievements and transformations it has undergone in its new phase.

    Dr. Khalid Samadi, President of the Maghreb Education Federation, provided an overview of the Federation and its objectives, appreciating the delegation’s presence to learn about ICESCO’s areas of competence and its efforts in serving its Member States.

    A video introducing ICESCO was then screened, followed by presentations by Dr. Omar Halli, Advisor to ICESCO’s Director-General for the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW), Dr. Ahmed Al-Banyan, Supervisor of the Education Sector, Ms. Ramata Almamy Mbaye, Head of the Social and Human Sciences Sector, and Dr. Youssef Ismaili, Expert at the ICESCO Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers. These presentations covered the working mechanisms of the various sectors and centers within ICESCO, as well as the key programs and projects being implemented.

    The meeting concluded with a discussion session between the doctoral students, university professors, and ICESCO representatives.

    At the end of the meeting, Dr. Abdelilah Benarafa took the delegation on a tour of the International Exhibition and Museum of the Prophet’s Seerah and Islamic Civilization, currently housed at ICESCO’s headquarters.

    Discussing cooperation enhancement between ICESCO and Ibn Tofail University in Morocco

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), received Dr. Mohamed Larbi Kerkeb, President of Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, Morocco. Both parties discussed enhancing cooperation between the Organization and the University in several fields, chief among them being artificial intelligence.

    During the Meeting, held today, Monday, June 10, 2024 at ICESCO headquarters in Rabat, Dr. AlMalik emphasized the Organization’s commitment to openness and collaboration with universities. He acknowledged that universities and research centers are the best incubators for innovation and creativity. He explained that ICESCO implements many activities and projects with universities and places great importance on its scientific chairs program, which has established many chairs in various prestigious universities inside and outside the Islamic world. ICESCO DG also reaffirmed the Organization’s ongoing work to strengthen cooperation with and among universities through the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.

    ICESCO DG praised the recommendations issued by the international conference “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities and Challenges,” which ICESCO and the University co-organized, along with the Moroccan Ministry Delegate in Charge of Human Rights, in cooperation with the Council of Europe, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, and the United Nations Development Programme. He pointed out that ICESCO places great importance on the ethical and value-based dimensions of artificial intelligence, as reflected in its preparation of the Charter on Artificial Intelligence in the Islamic World.

    For his part, Dr. Kerkeb commended ICESCO’s roles and efforts in supporting universities and contributing to the development of scientific research. He reaffirmed Ibn Tofail University’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Organization in various programs and projects, whether related to artificial intelligence and technology or other fields of applied sciences and humanities.

    The Meeting was attended by Dr. Ahmed Ajaoun, Dean of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences at Ibn Tofail University, Dr. Omar Halli, Advisor to ICESCO DG for the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World, and Mr. Mohamed Hedi Sehili, Director of the Department of Legal Affairs and International Standards at ICESCO.

    Launch of Third Edition of ICESCO Open Education Chair at Cadi Ayyad University

    The third edition of the “MasterClass,” organized by the Education Sector of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, kicked off on Tuesday, 4 June 2024, to benefit over 90 Ph.D. students and researchers and professors in Cadi Ayyad University. This MasterClass is part of “ICESCO Open Education Chair: Towards Equitable Access to Inclusive and Quality Education,” at Mohammed V University in Rabat, which is held in partnership with several Moroccan and international universities, under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation of the Kingdom of Morocco.

    This three-day edition, held in-person and via videoconference, is part of the activities to celebrate Marrakech as the Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2024. This edition reflects ICESCO’s efforts to contribute to the development of scientific research among its Member States and to enhance scientific and educational skills in open education, open educational resources, copyrights and authorship, licensing, open data, and personal data protection.

    The opening ceremony was attended by high-level officials from the parties involved and representatives of the participating universities. It included artistic and musical performances by a group of students from Mohammed V University and an artistic workshop on arabesque.
