In activation of the proclamation of 2019 as year of Islamic cultural heritage ISESCO schedules 37 activities inside and outside the seat country
The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), proclaimed 2019 as year of heritage in the Islamic world in application of the resolution of the Tenth Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers. In a statement released on the occasion, ISESCO invited Member States to take the necessary measures to celebrate this great event.
In this context, ISESCO decided to implement 37 activities in order to publicize, safeguard, digitalize, and document civilizational landmarks and Islamic heritage; activate its role in local development; restore manuscripts; promote handicrafts and museums; and encourage craftsmen.
These activities will be implemented throughout 2019 at ISESCO headquarters and in these 15 Member States: Palestine, Iraq, Jordan, Tunisia, Qatar, Morocco, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Brunei Darussalam, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Kirghizstan, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and India.
In this regard, the activities include holding the 11th Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers, the International Forum on the importance of good governance in safeguarding tangible heritage in Tunisia, a regional symposium on handicrafts in Kirghizstan, the 17th Meeting of the Consultative Council of the Islamic World Heritage Committee, the 8th Meeting of the Islamic World Heritage Committee, the 10th Meeting of ISESCO Archeology Experts Committee in charge of preparing technical reports on the Israeli attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque and its vicinity.
The scheduled activities also include providing support to the cultural institutions in Al-Quds Al-Sharif on the occasion of the Celebration of Al-Quds as 2019 Islamic Culture Capital, including the production of documentary on handicrafts and traditional crafts in Palestine in general and Al-Quds Al-Sharif in particular; the preparation of a guide to document popular proverbs, stories and rarities in Palestine, and a study to document Al-Quds’ libraries looted in 1984; and the organization of a national workshop on raising awareness of the tangible national Palestinian heritage and ways to safeguard it.
Furthermore, the programmes of the activation of ISESCO Regional Center for Training Museum Specialists in Burkina Faso will be implemented by holding a national workshop on museum documentation, and a semi-regional training session on preservation and maintenance mechanisms in museums; supporting Ahmed Baba Institute in Timbuktu to hold a training session on restoring and indexing manuscripts and documents; acquiring a number of relevant equipment; supporting programmes for raising awareness of women on preserving and highlighting the cultural heritage to serve local development in the Republic of Mali; and supporting the Project of Safeguarding Mauritanian National Manuscripts (inventorying and indexing).
The programme of ISESCO’s activities on this occasion includes holding 13 national and regional training sessions, conducting 6 studies, printing 3 books, supporting 3 projects, granting ISESCO Encouragement Award to four (4) craftsmen in the celebrated Islamic Culture Capitals for 2019; and designing a virtual museum on palaces and castles in Morocco. Besides, the programme includes the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites on 18 April 2019.
