    ICESCO and SSC Explore Avenues of Cooperation

    Dr. Salim AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Dr. Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) and CEO of the Saudi Space Commission (SSC). During the meeting, the two parties explored avenues of cooperation between the Organization and the Commission, in concert with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and discussed means for enhancing cooperation with space authorities in the Islamic world and beyond.

    The meeting was held on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at SSC’s headquarters in Riyadh, in the presence of Engineer Majed Alonazi, Chief Operating Officer at SSC, along with several sector heads in the Commission, and Mr. Hani bin Hamza Mansi, Advisor to the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. During the meeting, ICESCO DG emphasized that space science holds a special place in the Organization’s new vision and strategy given the prospects it offers for the future and the tremendous potential of its applications in helping humanity overcome challenges and achieve sustainable development. He also reviewed the upcoming space-related initiatives due to be launched by ICESCO.

    Dr. AlMalik noted that the Organization signed a number of agreements to foster cooperation in the field of space science among its Member States, and between them and non-Member States that had made significant strides and remarkable achievements in the field. “ICESCO encourages the exchange of expertise and new research findings in the field of space science and applications and is keen to establish fruitful cooperation with SSC and other space bodies and institutions in the Member States and beyond to attain these objectives,” explained ICESCO DG.

    For his part, Dr. Al-Tamimi commended the roles played by ICESCO and expressed the SSC’s willingness to cooperate with the Organization and with bodies and institutions specialized in the field of space in the Islamic world and beyond, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to supporting the upcoming space-related initiatives due to be launched by ICESCO.

    At the close of the meeting, the parties agreed on the participation of SSC in ICESCO’s annual Global Space Science Forum, and that ICESCO will participate in the coming session of the International Space Conference due to be organized by the Commission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    ICESCO Participates in ICIC 35th Session in Jeddah

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) participated in the meetings of the 35th session of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent (ICIC), held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, on January 5 – 6, hosted by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, with the participation of presidents and trustees of the Red Crescent Organizations in the Committee’s Member States and several institutions working in the social and humanitarian fields.

    In his intervention during the meetings, Dr. Ahmed Said Bah, Advisor to the Director-General (DG) for Partnerships and International Cooperation, gave a presentation on the Organization’s programs and initiatives in the social and humanitarian field, and ICESCO’s efforts to support its Member States in addressing the negative repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The two-day meetings explore the latest updates related to providing humanitarian aid to natural disaster-affected populations and humanitarian relief for displaced people in the OIC Member States, sustaining cooperation and coordination on humanitarian action, and follow-up on the ICIC program for irregular migrants. The meetings also discuss reports on the management of the International Crescent, the Islamic Forum of International Humanitarian Law, and the consultative meetings between the ICIC and the national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies of the OIC Member States.

    Based in the city of Benghazi in Libya, ICIC is one of OIC’s specialized institutions.     ICESCO and ILM Institute for Islamic Studies in Maldives Explore Cooperation Prospects in Teaching Arabic

    The Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) held a meeting with ILM Institute for Islamic Studies in the Republic of the Maldives to discuss the prospects for cooperation in teaching Arabic for non-Arabic speakers, rehabilitating Maldivian teachers, developing their skills and enhancing their competencies, and benefiting from the experience of ICESCO Center in overseeing the production of educational books of Arabic in the Maldives.

    The meeting, held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, brought together Dr. Majdi Haji Ibrahim, Head of ICESCO Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers, along with Dr. Youssef Ismaili, Expert at the Center, as well as Dr. Muhammad Shahim, President of the Institute, and Prof., Director of the Institute’s Educational Affairs Department.

    During this meeting, Dr. Majdi and Dr. Ismaili reviewed the role and efforts of ICESCO Center in spreading Arabic and consolidating its position in the ICESCO Member States and beyond through a series of workshops and training sessions targeting the teachers of Arabic for non-Arabic speakers. They also noted the Center’s key roles in providing advice and sharing technical and academic expertise to produce Arabic educational content that suits students’ needs and interests.

    ICESCO and Pakistan National Commission Explore Means for Enhancing Cooperation in Technology

    Dr. Raheel Qamar, Director of the Science and Technology Sector at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Mr. Syed Junaid Akhlaq, Secretary-General of the Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO, and together they explored avenues of cooperation between the Organization and the Commission in the fields of science, technology and the provision of scholarships.

    During the meeting held today, Friday, December 31, 2021, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training in the Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Qamar noted that ICESCO is working in concert with the Virtual University of Pakistan and COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) towards the implementation of several projects in the fields of sciences, technology and space science. Some of these projects are aimed at providing scholarships, fostering cooperation and partnership in the field of artificial intelligence and harnessing its applications for the development of distance learning platforms, and devising comprehensive educational programs to give impetus to the future of education and scientific research.

    Dr. Qamar emphasized that, within the framework of ICESCO’s International Network of Chairs for Science, the Organization will cooperate with Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) and the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan in establishing two scientific chairs and launching joint programmes and initiatives with the Pakistan National Commission.

    For his part, Mr. Syed Junaid Akhlaq commended ICESCO’s efforts in its areas of competence and indicated the Commission’s willingness to cooperate with the Organization in future programmes.

    ICESCO and ICO Reaffirm Cooperation in Valorizing Desert Cultural Heritage

    Dr. Salim AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with HH Prince Sultan bin Saud bin Mohammed, Vice President of the International Camel Organization (ICO), to explore major cooperation programs to achieve the objectives of the signed partnership agreement between the two Organizations. They also discussed the key proposed programs and activities for future cooperation between ICESCO and ICO, mainly King Abdulaziz International Camel Festival and the cultural heritage pertaining to the desert.

    The meeting was held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as part of partnership and cooperation between ICESCO and the ICO with the presence of Dr. Mubarak Al-Suwailem, ICO Secretary-General, and several officials from the Organization,  Mr. Humaid Ali Al Zara’e, Director-General of the Royal Camels Corps in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as Dr. Said Bah, Advisor to ICESCO Director-General for Partnerships and International Cooperation.

    The meeting touched upon the inscription of both King Abdulaziz International Camel Festival in Riyadh on ICESCO’s Lists of Intangible Heritage in the Islamic World and the heritage relating to camels and desert culture, through preparing files and submitting them to the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World, to valorize this cultural heritage and promote industries traditionally related to camels.

    The meeting was held on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at the Complex’s headquarters in Riyadh and was attended by a number of the Complex’s officials. During the meeting, the two parties discussed means for enhancing cooperation in concert with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, particularly through the implementation of capacity-building programmes in the field of the Arabic language. The two parties also reviewed the major initiatives and training workshops organized recently by the Complex and ICESCO’s Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers.

    ICESCO and Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Explore Arrangements for Holding Conference of Environment Ministers in Islamic World

    Dr. Salim AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia, to explore arrangements for holding the 9th session of the Conference of Environment Ministers in the Islamic World, due to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in 2022, and the current edition of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Award for Environmental Management in the Islamic World (KSAAEM), in coordination and consultation with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

    The meeting, held today, Thursday, December 30, 2021, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, touched upon the preparations and arrangements for holding the 9th session of the Conference of Environment Ministers in the Islamic world, due to be organized in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2022, in partnership between ICESCO and the Ministry.

    ICESCO and MCIT Agree on Implementing Joint Cooperation Programs

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Eng. Haitham bin Abdulrahman Al-Ohali, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in Saudi Arabia. They reviewed the comprehensive executive plan for cooperation between the Organization and the Ministry in the digital field, particularly through the development of online Arabic content, in concert with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

    The meeting was held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Riyadh and was attended by a number of the Ministry’s officials and advisors. During the meeting, the two parties agreed on implementing a set of programs in the various ICESCO Member States over the period 2022-2025, notably the “Attaa Digital” Hackathon Project, which will be implemented in Egypt, in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Egypt. The Hackathon will be a youth-oriented pilot project open to all Arab countries. ICESCO will facilitate coordination and communication with these countries’ National Commissions for Education, Science and Culture to ensure their participation.

    The two parties also discussed the proposed mechanisms for implementing the cooperation programs and activities contained in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between ICESCO and the MCIT to cooperate on spreading technical awareness and enriching technical Arabic content. The MoU was signed during the 14th Session of ICESCO’s General Conference, hosted by Egypt, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The MoU sets out the framework for implementing joint programs for training, conducting joint research and studies, providing advisory services to the Member States in the areas of cooperation, launching specialized platforms and developing websites and applications.

    At the close of the meeting, the two parties agreed on establishing a working group consisting of representatives of ICESCO, the Ministry and the Saudi National Commission to follow up on the implementation of the cooperation programs.

    ICESCO and Alwaleed Philanthropies Explore Future Cooperation Programs and Projects

    Dr. Salim AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with HRH Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud, Secretary-General of Alwaleed Philanthropies, and together they reviewed the outcomes of joint programs during 2021. The parties explored future cooperation projects between the Organization and the Foundation, in coordination with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

    During the meeting, held yesterday, 28 December 2021, at the headquarters of the Alwaleed Philanthropies in Riyadh, ICESCO DG reiterated his gratitude to HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, Chairman of the Alwaleed Philanthropies, for the Foundation’s support for ICESCO including a donation of USD 2,090,000 to implement projects aiming at mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic through supporting women and youth entrepreneurship. These projects provided assistance to 10 African countries to address the repercussions of the pandemic. Dr. AlMalik also provided the Secretary-General with statistics and operational data pertaining to the implementation of the program in all the beneficiary countries.

    For her part, HRH Princess Lamia commended ICESCO’s tireless efforts, stressing the eagerness of Alwaleed Philanthropies to further develop partnerships with the Organization.

    During the meeting, the two parties explored ways to develop constructive partnership and cooperation between ICESCO and Alwaleed Philanthropies, through sustaining cooperation on projects related to countering the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the production of educational media materials, as well as face masks, sanitizers, liquid soap, detergents and various protection tools. The meeting also explored prospects of cooperation in the field of safeguarding tangible and intangible heritage, especially in the African region, encouraging ICESCO Member States to inscribe their heritage sites, particularly endangered ones, on ICESCO’s Islamic World Heritage Lists and UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and providing support to the Member States where these sites are located.

    The Science and Technology Sector at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) held two separate meetings with the Virtual University of Pakistan and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan, with the aim to develop cooperation between ICESCO and both the University and the Ministry to create digital platforms for online education in Pakistan.

    During his meeting with Dr. Arshad Saleem Bhatti, Rector of the Virtual University of Pakistan, Dr. Raheel Qamar, Head of ICESCO’s Science and Technology Sector, reaffirmed the Organization’s keenness to promote cooperation and partnerships in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), capitalize on its applications, and develop online education platforms and integrated educational programs aiming at fostering the future of education and scientific research.

    For his part, Dr. Bhatti expressed the University’s willingness to develop research centers with ICESCO to benefit from open AI research platforms. The two parties also agreed to develop training sessions for the benefit of students and young people in the fields of digital entrepreneurship, digital marketing, digital literacy, and several related topics.

    During the second meeting with Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, Federal Secretary for IT and Communication in the Pakistani Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Qamar underscored that ICESCO accords special attention to strengthening cooperation with its partners. The goal is to build young people’s capacities in modern science and technology and contribute to achieving sustainable development. He also commended the activities of the Pakistani Ministry in the field of IT development and related fields, aiming at contributing to the development in the countries of the Islamic world.

    For his part, Dr. Rajput highlighted the significance of cooperation between ICESCO and the Ministry with regard to providing digital platforms in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, noting the possibility of intensifying initiatives and cooperation activities in African countries to promote entrepreneurship and exchange experiences.

    At the close of both meetings, ICESCO, the Pakistani Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Virtual University of Pakistan agreed to expand the scope of future cooperation through signing a strategic partnership agreement in areas of common interest.
