    Successful Launch of the CanSat at the End of ICESCO’s Practical Workshop in Burkina Faso

    The workshop on designing an educational satellite (CanSat), held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in Burkina Faso, in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, and in cooperation with the National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO, concluded with the successful launch of a CanSat from the city of Koudougou.

    This workshop, which was held December 26-29, 2022, for the benefit of African researchers and university students, in the presence of officials, experts and international researchers in space science, included a theoretical part for the presentation of CanSat and the relevant technologies, followed by practical workshops on the use of the accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope sensor, in addition to the collection and analysis of data, the development and experimentation of landing systems using fabric parachutes.

    Following the success of the test launch, the workshop participants returned from Koudougou to the capital Ouagadougou to participate in the closing ceremony, on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the headquarters of the Higher Institute of Electrical Engineering. At the beginning of this ceremony, they delivered a speech in which they expressed their satisfaction with the workshop, which aimed to strengthen their capacity in space technology and contribute to the development of this field in their countries.

    For his part, Mr. Innocent Compaoré, Director General of the Institute, stressed the importance of the workshop for the students of Burkina Faso and expressed his gratitude for hosting such event, in partnership with the Ministry and ICESCO. Dr. Alim Rustem Aslan, Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Istanbul, who led the workshop, congratulated the participating students for their commitment and diligence during all phases of the educational satellite design, data collection and analysis.

    In his address, Dr. Muhammad Sharif, Advisor at the Science and Technology Sector of ICESCO, commended the efforts of all parties who contributed to the success of this training workshop, and reaffirmed the Organization’s commitment to supporting the capacities of youth in Africa. Dr. Fatié Ouattara, Secretary-General of Burkina Faso National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO, and Dr. Frédéric Ouattara, former Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, expressed their willingness to cooperate with ICESCO in the implementation of programs and projects aimed at achieving sustainable development and promoting the capacities of youth.

    During the closing ceremony, certificates were awarded to the students who participated in this event, and tribute was paid to the experts and officials for having ensured the success of this 2nd edition of the workshop on the design of CanSat in Burkina Faso.

    Review of Cooperation Prospects Between ICESCO and the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), met with Ambassador Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber, Supervisor General of the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, to discuss cooperation prospects between the two sides in order to enhance development and reconstruction efforts in Yemen.

    The meeting, which took place on Thursday, 29 December 2022 at the headquarters of the Program in Riyadh, focused on cooperation between the two sides in the development of curricula, support for youth, preservation and promotion of heritage, and training for its protection.

    The meeting also discussed the projects and initiatives of the Program in the different Yemeni governorates. Dr. AlMalik praised the contribution of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the fields of education and culture as well as to the various vital sectors in order to strengthen the Yemeni capacities and executives through the said Program.

    At the end of the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of coordinating development efforts and actions in Yemen in the upcoming days, in cooperation with the Yemeni government, to support efforts geared to improve the living conditions of the Yemeni people.

    The two parties agreed that ICESCO would suggest and present some programs and projects to the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, for approval and agreement on their joint implementation during the year 2023.

    Announcement of winners of ICESCO-Hamdan Prize for Voluntary Development of Education Facilities and Call for Nominations for Fourth Edition

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Distinguished Academic Performance are pleased to announce the three winners of the Third Edition of ICESCO-Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Voluntary Development of Education Facilities in the Islamic World, who have submitted outstanding educational projects in the Islamic world.

    The Prize was launched by the Organization and the Foundation to encourage outstanding, sustainable and integrated educational projects, and pay tribute to figures and institutions in charge of voluntary and charity initiatives in the field of education. The Prize is awarded biennially to three winners, who each get the Prize shield and a monetary reward, which is to be used to support and develop the winning project or educational work in general.

    This edition saw the participation of 40 nominees who submitted educational projects that aim at promoting education performance, upgrading educational services, and improving the necessary infrastructure. The three winners were: the King Faisal Foundation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; the Royal Humanitarian Foundation in the Kingdom of Bahrain; and the Family Educational Services Foundation in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

    The winners have submitted model and leading projects and quality field achievements that included the establishment of universities, educational complexes and centers and the creation of technical and professional training programs inside their respective countries as well as in the Arab, Asian and African regions.

    The Prize will be awarded to the winners shortly, in coordination between ICESCO and the Foundation. The first and second editions of the Prize were awarded during the 14th Session of the ICESCO General Conference, held in Cairo, in December 2021.

    ICESCO Educational Center in Malaysia Organizes Various Activities to Celebrate the Arabic Language Day

    In celebration of the World Arabic Language Day, ICESCO Educational Center in Malaysia organized the “International Arabic Celebration of Islamic Cultural Heritage”, on Monday, December 26, 2022, in Kuala Lumpur. ICESCO Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers also participated in a poetry evening in Rabat, organized by the Central Office of the Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights, in partnership with the House of Poetry in Morocco and the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Arabic Language.

    During the opening session of ICESCO Educational Center celebration, which was launched in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, December 26, 2022, in partnership between the Center and the International Islamic University Malaysia, and in cooperation with a number of Malaysian universities, Dr. Yaqoub bin Hassan, Head of ICESCO Educational Center in Malaysia, delivered an address whrein he indicated that the Organization attaches great importance to Arabic language at various levels.

    In the plenary session of the Eighth World Conference on Arabic Language and Literature, Dr. Majdi Hajji Ibrahim, Head of ICESCO Center of Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers, gave a videoconference intervention on “Teaching Arabic from a Religious Perspective.”

    ICESCO Holds Second International Model Satellite (CAnSat) Workshop and Aerospace Symposium in Burkina Faso

    The second session of the International Symposium on Space Sciences and the training workshop on designing a model satellite (Cansat), which is being held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation in the Republic of Burkina Faso, and hosted by the University of Norbert Zongo, kicked off in the capital, Ouagadougou, under the theme “Building the Global Workforce for the Future”, for the benefit of university students from various African countries, and in the presence of a high-caliber group of international officials and experts in the field of space science.

    The opening session of the international symposium, which began its activities, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, and will continue for three days, saw the participation of Dr. Issa Abdou Moumoula, President of Norbert Zongo University, where he gave an address in which he emphasized that the event is the result of a joint effort that represents the desire of the partners to develop space science and technology in Burkina Faso, valorizing ICESCO’s efforts to encourage its Member States to invest in modern sciences.

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is pleased to announce the winners of its poetry prize, “Culture Capital in the Eyes of Poets,” which it launched as part of its Programme for Culture Capitals in the Islamic World, within the framework of its celebration of Rabat and Cairo as Culture Capitals in the Islamic World for 2022. Three poems were selected for each city, out of the total of 150 poems submitted.

    The Organization had formed an international jury to process and evaluate all the submitted poems, following artistic quality, uniqueness and creativity criteria. The jury selected six poems that best fulfilled these criteria, three for the category of “Rabat, Capital of Lights,” while the other three were selected as part of the second category, “Cairo, City of the Thousand Minarets.” The winners will receive certificates of appreciation and monetary rewards, standing at USD 2,000, USD 1,500, and USD 1,000 respectively for the winner, runner-up, and second runner-up of each category.

    In the category of, “Rabat, Capital of Lights,” the jury selected the poem, “A Harp of Lights,” by Poet Muhammad Majid Al-Khattab from Syria, as the winner; “Because You Are the Light,” by Poet Hassan Boufares from Morocco, as runner up, and “A Musical Tour in Rabat,” by Poet Mohammed Al-Habib Mohammed Hamed Younes from the Sudan, as the second runner up.

    ICESCO and Azerbaijan Sign Joint Action Plan to Implement Several Programs and Projects

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Republic of Azerbaijan signed a joint action plan to promote a culture of peace, consolidate the values of tolerance and dialogue among cultures, and protect cultural heritage in the countries of the Islamic world and ensure its sustainability, by supporting the implementation of ICESCO’s programs and projects.

    The Action Plan was signed on Saturday, December 24, 2022, at the Organization’s Headquarters in Rabat, by Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), and Mr. Nazim Samadov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Morocco.

    In his address at the signing

    ICESCO Executive Council Concludes its Proceedings by Adopting the Final Documents of its 43rd Session

    The Executive Council of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) concluded its proceedings, on Friday, 23 December 2022, at the Organization’s Headquarters in Rabat, by adopting the final documents of its 43rd Session and the reports submitted by the General Directorate, and approving the offer of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to host the 44th Session, in December 2023.

    The meeting started with an opening session during which Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of the General Conference of ICESCO, and Dr. Dawas Tayseer Dawas, Chairman of the Executive Council of ICESCO, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, addressed the Council.

    The working sessions included presentations by ICESCO’s sectors, departments and specialized centers on the programs and projects implemented during the current year, as well as discussions and interventions by Council members on the documents and plans submitted by the Organization’s General Directorate.

    In this connection, ICESCO DG reaffirmed that the Organization will strive to meet the needs of its Member States, calling for enhanced communication and cooperation.

    The Council adopted the Executive Report on ICESCO’s activities for 2021, the Organization’s financial reports for 2021, and the report on Member States’ contributions for 2021, as well as several administrative and legal documents and proposals.

    At the end of its meeting, the Council took many decisions, including the formal accession of the Lebanese Republic to ICESCO, which was invited to designate the competent parties for cooperation with the Organization.

    The Council also welcomed the proposal of His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to set up a fund to support talents in the Islamic world, calling on ICESCO to coordinate and cooperate with Egypt to draw up the legal framework, plans and mechanisms of action in consultation with Sudan, Morocco and Benin, and present the vision to the Executive Council at its next session.

    In the same vein, the Council adopted the outline of the ICESCO Draft Charter for Artificial Intelligence and Metaverse, entrusting the Organization with its elaboration for submission to the next Council.

    It also welcomed the implementation of ICESCO’s first session of the Young Professionals Program, calling on Member States to support it.

    In his address at the closing session, Dr. AlMalik reaffirmed that the Organization will do its utmost to meet the needs of its Member States and invest in its human capital in order to become a model of hope and action.

    The Chairman of ICESCO’s Executive Council thanked the Council members for the richness of their debates and interventions during the said sessions, commending the decisions adopted by the Council before announcing the closing of the 43rd Session.
