    ICESCO holds training session in Cameroon on improving hygiene in rural schools

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is holding a three-day training session on health and hygiene in schools, in partnership with the Cameroonian National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO, for the benefit of several education officials and staff. The training session falls within the framework of ICESCO’s program to improve water, sanitation and hygiene services in 1000 rural schools in its Member States, and as part of the activities of the celebration of Yaoundé as Culture Capital in the Islamic World for 2022.

    During the first day of the hybrid session, which kicked off on Monday (February 20, 2023), Dr. Foued El-Ayni, Program Manager at the Science and Technology Sector of ICESCO, reviewed the objectives of the program, most notably the promotion of water services, safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, and raising awareness of best practices to preserve the health of students and teachers.

    For his part, Mr. Abdelaziz Yauba, Secretary General of the Cameroonian National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO, expressed his thanks to ICESCO and its interest in improving the educational conditions of students in rural areas through developing facilities, promoting healthy behaviors, and improving educational opportunities for girls.

    ICESCO Participates in 6th Edition of International Forum on HR in Tangiers

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) participated in the 6th edition of the International Forum on Human Resources (HR) in Tangiers, which was held by AGEF Chamal Association, in partnership with the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, under the theme: “Innovation and Industrial Excellence in the Era of the New Development Model: What Function for the HR?”

    Dr. Kais Hammami, Director of the Center of Strategic Foresight, Ms. Jihan Charfi, Head of the Human Resources Department, and Ms. Rim Jalloul, from ICESCO Center of Strategic Foresight, represented the Organization in the two-day forum, which started on February 17, 2023.

    In his address during the “Human Resources Strategies in the Digital Age: Innovative and Adaptive Practices” session, Dr. Hammami presented an overview of strategic foresight, indicating that according to studies, 60% of tomorrow’s jobs do not exist today, which requires us to deal with the HR function through anticipating these jobs and adopting proactive positions to keep pace with the demographic boom that the world is witnessing.

    ICESCO ChatGPT Symposium discusses Opportunities and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence Platforms

    Rich discussions and anticipatory outlooks on the future marked the high-level scientific symposium held by Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) on “ChatGPT: Artificial Intelligence Platforms, Opportunities and Challenges.” The Symposium discussed how these chatbots can serve humanity and explored their dangers in relation to security and ethical issues.

    The Symposium, which saw high-caliber participation including professors, researchers, academics and specialists in the field of artificial intelligence, kicked off today, Monday, February 20, 2023, with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran. Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General, gave the opening remark where he reaffirmed that ICESCO recognizes the role of AI applications in developing societies and scoring advances in key sectors such as healthcare, education and public safety, calling for using AI’s best practices and addressing its challenges.

    In his presentation, Dr. Paul Théron, Director of the French Aerospace Cyber Resilience (Cyb’Air) Research Chair at Thales Group, talked about the ethics and challenges of human interaction with chatGPT, stating that AI applications are limitless and can simulate the human brain in a myriad of fields.

    Dr. Salah Baina, Professor at the National School of Computer Science and System Analysis (ENSIAS) at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, talked about how AI technology can evolve and learn, which allows it to continuously develop its performance to become more effective in task execution, thus enabling humans to focus on more important issues.

    The Symposium’s session on “ChatGPT: Opportunities and Challenges,” which was moderated by Dr. Mohammed Sharif, Advisor at the Sector of Science and Technology, saw rich discussions on the promising opportunities of this new technology and ways to capitalize on it to achieve sustainable development and improve services.     ICESCO Director-General Receives Ambassador of Türkiye to Rabat

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), received Mr. Ömer Faruk Doğan, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Kingdom of Morocco, where they explored ways to enhance cooperation between ICESCO and Türkiye in the fields of education, science and culture.

    During the meeting, held on Monday (February 20, 2023), at ICESCO Headquarters, in Rabat, Mr. Doğan expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to ICESCO Director-General and all the Organization’s staff for their sympathy and condolences on the earthquake that hit Turkey.

    For his part, Dr. AlMalik reaffirmed the Organization’s willingness to provide all the necessary support and assistance in its fields of competence.

    The meeting discussed the possibility of building fruitful cooperation between ICESCO and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) to implement several humanitarian programs and projects in some of the neediest African countries.

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), congratulated Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of the Arab League Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ALECSO), on his re-election to this prestigious position for a second term.

    In a telephone call with Dr. Ould Amar following his re-election by ALECSO’s General Conference, Dr. AlMalik hailed this step, noting the distinguished efforts exerted by ALECSO’s DG during his first term and his role in promoting cooperation and partnership between ALECSO and ICESCO.

    Dr. AlMalik, on his own and on behalf of all ICESCO staff, wished Dr. Ould Amar every success in further developing ALECSO and leading the Organization in conscientiously fulfilling its mission.

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in cooperation with the International University of Rabat (UIR), held a training session within the framework of ICESCO’s “360° Peace Approach” integration in academic circles, which aims at promoting curricula on peace and security in the Organization’s Member States through an approach based on an inclusive and multidisciplinary methodology.

    At the beginning of the session, held on Friday 17 February 2023, Ms. Ramata Almamy Mbaye, Head of ICESCO’s Social and Human Sciences Sector, reviewed the Organization’s vision in the field of global development and underlined ICESCO’s commitment to promoting human capital and consolidating peace and security given their central role in any development process.

    Dr. Mohamed Zine El Abidine, Head of Culture and Communication Sector at ICESCO, gave the introductory lecture, in which he discussed the importance of ICESCO’s “360° Peace Approach,” which highlights the promotion of culture and respect for cultural diversity in the establishment and preservation of peace worldwide.

    For his part, Dr. Thierry Malbert, expert at ICESCO’s Center for Civilizational Dialogue, stressed the importance of the dialogue of civilizations in building peace.     ICESCO and IOM Sign Agreement to Implement Joint Programmes

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed an agreement for cooperation and partnership to implement several programmes, projects and activities to protect and build the capacities of migrants, guarantee their rights in education, science and culture, and contribute to addressing the challenges that hinder the governance of migration.

    The parties signed the agreement on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at ICESCO Headquarters in Rabat, in the presence of Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director General, Dr. Abdelilah Benarafa, ICESCO Deputy Director General, and Ms. Oguchi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General of Operations, along with ICESCO Heads of Sectors, Directors of Departments and Experts and a delegation from IOM.

    In his address during the signing, Dr. AlMalik expressed his happiness with this agreement and cooperation between ICESCO and IOM, which protects the human rights of vulnerable groups who have been forced to leave their countries, stressing that this goes hand in hand with ICESCO’s vision and strategic orientations, and hoping that this agreement will be a starting point for further development of partnership and cooperation between the two Organizations.

AlMalik, Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), received Dr. Nasr El-Din Ahmed Mohamed Khaled, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism in Sudan, in the presence of Ambassador Mawddah Omar Haj Al-Toum, Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to the Kingdom of Morocco, to discuss cooperation developments between ICESCO and Sudan in the Organization’s fields of competence.

    During the meeting, which took place on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at ICESCO Headquarters in Rabat, Dr. AlMalik reaffirmed the Organization’s eagerness to communicate and coordinate with its Member States through National Commissions to launch and implement programmes and initiatives that meet the needs of these countries in education, science and culture with maximum benefits.

    He pointed out that ICESCO implemented many programmes and projects in Sudan during 2022, in cooperation with several Sudanese authorities, especially in writing local African languages in Arabic script, supporting women’s entrepreneurship, and addressing the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also explained that ICESCO is fully prepared to cooperate with Sudanese authorities in the implementation of new programmes and projects.

    The meeting touched upon proposals to enhance cooperation between ICSESCO and Sudan during the next period.

    ICESCO and the Lebanese National Commission Examine Prospects for Cooperation in Strategic Foresight

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) held a meeting with the Lebanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture to discuss prospects for cooperation and partnership between ICESCO and the Lebanese Republic in the field of strategic foresight.

    ICESCO was represented in the meeting, held on Thursday (February 16, 2023) via videoconference, by Dr. Kais Hammami, Director of the Center of Strategic Foresight, Dr. Salim al-Habsi, Programs Manager at the General Secretariat of National Commissions and Conferences, and Ms. Rime Jalloul, from the Center of Strategic Foresight, as well as Ms. Hiba Nachabe, Secretary General the Lebanese National Commission, and Ms. Katya Ibrahim, Activity Coordinator at the Commission.

    During the meeting, Dr. Hammami reaffirmed that the ICESCO Center of Strategic Foresight seeks to enhance the foresight culture by conducting a series of studies, holding several training workshops, and promoting the adoption of AI strategies in Member States. He also reviewed the programs and initiatives of the Center, most notably the program on the skills and jobs of tomorrow.

    ICESCO holds training workshop in Tajikistan on Safeguarding Cultural Heritage

    The Sector of Culture and Communication at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is holding a training workshop in Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan, on safeguarding cultural heritage, in cooperation with Tajikistan National Commission for UNESCO and ICESCO. The session benefited 25 specialists and professionals in the field of cultural heritage.

    The three-day workshop kicked off Wednesday, February 15, 2023, and aims to promote the productivity of professionals working in the field of cultural heritage protection and build their capacities in terms of the mechanisms of inscribing cultural heritage, filling in forms and preparing national lists and catalogs to contribute to the preservation of the cultural depository of the people of the Islamic world.

    During the opening session of the workshop, attended by Mr. Mirza Sharif, Director-General of Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture in Tajikistan, Ms. Zulfiya Burkhon, Secretary-General of Tajikistan National Commission, commended the inscription of two cultural elements from Tajikistan on the Final List of Heritage in the Islamic World and 17 historical and cultural elements on the Tentative List. The Secretary-General also commended the Organization’s efforts to promote cultural and natural heritage in Muslim countries in national and international spheres and ensure its sustainable preservation and protection.

    For his part, Mr. Bilel Chebbi, Expert at the Sector of Culture and Communication, stressed the importance of the workshop, which aims to pool efforts to safeguard and promote Tajik cultural heritage.
