The Director-General\n(DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization\n(ICESCO), Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, reaffirmed that the Organization\u2019s interest in\nhuman rights in the Islamic world stems from its desire to redress\nmisconceptions about the situation of rights and freedoms in the region. The\nfocus is particularly on socioeconomic and cultural rights, he continued, while\nthe interest reflects ICESCO\u2019s firm resolve to overhaul national legislation to\nbecome compatible with international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nstatement was part of the DG\u2019s address at the ceremony that the Ministry of\nState for Human Rights and Relations with Parliament in Morocco held yesterday,\nin celebration of the 72nd<\/sup> Anniversary of the Universal Declaration\nof Human Rights under the theme \u201cTogether for Promoting Our Efforts to Protect\nHuman Rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. AlMalik\nstated that the day constitutes an occasion to recall our common duties to\nachieve human dignity and promote the principles of equality, equity and the\nvalues of solidarity and tolerance. He added that humanity should remember all\nthe lofty values shared between humans without any discrimination or exclusion.\nHe then underlined the importance of human rights in their global and holistic\ndimensions regardless of the conflicts, wars, and tensions in a large part of\nthe world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat binds\nhumanity exceeds what divides it, thus the need for action to offer appropriate\nconditions for a dignified living for the entire world\u2019s population,\u201d the DG\ncontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICESCO DG\nhighlighted that the major challenge to humanity lies in the ways of enforcing\nhuman rights in the context of crises, namely for the vulnerable. He noted that\nICESCO, out of its awareness of the enormous challenges that the COVID-19\npandemic triggered worldwide, took a string of measures to preserve the essential\nrights of the citizens of its Member States. The focus was namely on the\neducational, cultural, scientific, and communication fields and other rights\nfalling under the sphere of its competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. AlMalik\nalso lauded Morocco\u2019s efforts, under the leadership of H.M. King Mohammed VI,\nin human rights\u2019 promotion. Morocco enacted a range of laws and decrees that\nare in line with the global standards and UN principles ensuring rights and\nfreedoms for all. He then stressed ICESCO\u2019s willingness to work in tandem with\nthe Ministry under the partnership agreement that the parties signed during yesterday\u2019s\nceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the close\nof his address, ICESCO DG announced that the Organization will hold an\ninternational conference on human rights in the Islamic world that will bring\ntogether parliaments and civil society organizations. The aim, Dr. AlMalik\nadded, is to review the pioneering experiences of their respective Member\nStates, share expertise, and rectify misconceptions about their gains and\ndefend important strategic interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
